Boston College has published a book "Transforming Light: The Stained Glass Windows of Boston College" which includes stained glass windows by Alexander Locke.  He is my great grandfather.  I understand there are many of his windows all around this country and in Canada in churches and catherdrals still in existence and am looking for more information on them.

There is no mention of him on your website's History of Stained Glass.  I am wondering what the current thinking is about his work.

I know he also did paintings, some of which other family members have, and wood carvings, one of which was on the cover of a "Look" magazine when I was a child.  He did the Christmas cards for Bishop Munduline in NY for many years.  I've seen him referred to as a 'student' of Tiffany, and my aunt says they were friends.

Locke is remembered as a studio owner, designer, craftsman and an excellent colorist. According to the SGAA's Biographical Index (http://www.stainedglass.org/html/SGAApublications.htm), he was a partner in Arnold & Locke ca 1880 through 1893, which company employed William Willet. After that, he owned the Locke Decorating Company in Brooklyn.

He worked with La Farge on the decoration of the Vanderbilt houses and his company had numerous installations in churches around New York and New Jersey.

Thank you for responding.  I have found photos of 4 of his windows on the Carmelite Monastery in Philadelphia's website.  They are beautiful.

My family elders had said that he did windows at a cathedral in Montreal and in Chicago.  I am trying to find confirmation and information on this.

Information on the Boston College book can be found at
